Ooof!
I told you yesterday about Janna.
I just comforted her crying mother.
Human individuals understand context, human mobs do not. And online most people are just part of a mob.
Here's the thing. A hotel owner hit and publicly shouted at Janna’s mother.
If you read my post yesterday you can certainly wrap your mind around the fact that he wasn't entirely unjustified.
Ramadan is supposed to be a month of helping the poor, most definitely inclusive of women and orphans. But it's also a time when people fast whether they want to or not because it's the law, and life is hard for everyone one way or another - and going without food, water or cigarettes for a day (in a land where everyone is addicted) will make anybody ornery.
Plus, well, I’m not good at a lot of things but I’m better than most people at putting up with pushy beggar women. I doubt if any other tourists here are quite as gifted in that field.
So what do you do when you're a hotel owner and a childish beggar woman pesters each of your guests as they enter or leave your hotel?
Like I said, let s/he who is without sin cast the first stone.
That said…
Imagine this woman’s perspective. Even under the best of circumstances I doubt she was very capable or able to garner respect from regular people.
Now her husband is dead and she has no one to help her and her …
Sorry I was getting carried away and after all, what can be said that you can't already imagine?
What broke my focus was another little barefoot girl, this one 5 years old who came over to me on the stoop where I’m writing to try and sell me beads or tissues. Needless to say I’m as financially challenged as I was 10 minutes ago but she was so happy to talk to someone who actually looked her in the eye that even though she definitely believed I don't have money on me she kept at the game long enough for me to put phone away and play “what's your name” with her.
It's good to do that.
Do I have a solution for the world? Yes I do.
It isn't mine. Hell, it isn't even Isaiah's. Or at least he doesn't claim that it's his.
It's spoken ny The Prophet as the direct word of GOD.
So that's the Big Picture.
As for the small picture….
Well, with so many Janna's and so many Janna's moms, what's the point in helping just one person?
I don't know.
But maybe some good would be done if someone Jewish sent her $18 with a nice Jewish message. I don't know. That probably won't bring the hostages home, end the war or bring peace on Earth but if anybody does want to send her money I’ll give it to her or, better yet, I’ll use it to buy her and her kids some clean clothes. I imagine that $18 should cover 2 pairs of kids shoes (tho of course I can't promise what I don't yet know).
Needless to say, I’ll accept and pass along that assistance if it comes from non-Jews as well, but I had a thought and figured to share it.
I’ll stop now because I imagine it would probably be considered unmanly for an adult male to publicly cry in Cairo.
